SILVER CITY His stint lasted just seven days. Mark Youngs was selected as the head women s basketball coach at Western New Mexico University On Wednesday May 30, and then resigned Wednesday, June 6.
WNMU assistant athletic director Brian Kortz declined to comment on the situation, but confirmed the resignation by Youngs, and stated a new search would begin immediately for a replacement.
Youngs took over the helm from Greg Adams, who resigned after this past season.
Youngs was coming to Western from Davenport where he amassed a 238-62 overall record. He reached seven NAIA Division II national championship tournaments, including a title game in 2011, the Elite Eight in 2009 and the Sweet Sixteen in 2008 and 2010.
His last season with the Panthers saw Youngs go 37-1. In fact in more than nine seasons with the Panthers, he never recorded a losing record.
I would like to thank Mark Coleman and the entire search committee for having the faith in me, Youngs stated in a press release the date of his hire. I would also like to thank my family and friends that prayed for us that we would find a position this summer that would work for us. I am just very excited to get back in the gym again.
