Romney/GOP Real Manchurian Candidates

Subtitle: Or How China Just Pwned America thanks to twenty years of Republican policies.

For years now the GOP economic plan to outsource US jobs to other countries (also ably assisted by certain neo-liberal DLC Dems), such as China, while also relying upon China to finance our national debt was viewed by people like -- oh, Republican presumptive presidential nominee, Mitt Romney -- as the greatest thing since sliced bread or the wheel, perhaps. The lost jobs in the US of A, the growing income inequality between the super-rich and everyone else, the lowering standards of living for most Americans (heavily subsidized by an ever larger debt burden) -- well who in the Republican Party cared about all that? Profits were up and Wall Street was making money in good times and bad (thanks to corporate welfare, bailouts, lower taxes and subsidies for companies that don't need them). Not the former head of Bain Capital or the current head of Goldman Sachs, that much is certain.

They, like many of their comrades, just assumed that American military might would trump all other considerations when it came to American foreign policy goals (which for the most part are focused on helping -- surprise -- major American industries such and Big Oil and the Military Industrial Complex).

Today, however, our American Empire builders had to back down from a cherished policy, i.e., putting the screws to Iran by using sanctions to keep Iranian oil off the world market as much as possible. You see, for the sanctions to be effective (and I don't especially mean effective in terms of obtaining leverage in our supposed negotiations regarding Iran's nuclear program), other countries have to abide by them. America doesn't really doesn't obtain any of our oil from Iran. We can't, by ourselves, affect Iranian oil revenues unless we are willing to impose a blockade, which, under international law, is an act of war.

Keeping Iranian oil off the market (and incidentally helping oil traders) requires the cooperation of other nations if you don't intend to start another pointless war in the Mideast. In order to obtain that "cooperation" America said it would impose sanctions on financial institutions in countries that continued to buy Iranian oil. China, coincidentally, buys around one fifth (20%) of all of Iran's oil and gas exports. So guess what happened today.

China wasn't very happy about reducing its oil purchases beyond the level set by the American sanctions regime. The Chinese government also happened to notice that the US government had already granted exemptions to its European allies, India and Japan, allowing them a "reprieve" from US financial sanctions even if they bought more Iranian oil than we would like them to do. I'm just guessing here, but I think it is safe to assume that representatives of China's government had "discussions" with our State Department regarding this unequal treatment by the US government when it came to granting a similar reprieve from these US financial penalties. And so voila! Today, America's foreign policy with respect to Iran took a back seat to Chinese demands:

(Reuters) - The United States gave China a six-month reprieve from Iran financial sanctions on Thursday, avoiding a diplomatic spat with a country whose support it needs to try to quell violence in Syria and rein in Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

With Thursday's decision to grant exceptions to China, which buys up to a fifth of Iran's oil exports, and Singapore, which buys Iranian fuel oil, the Obama administration has now spared all 20 of Iran's major oil buyers from its unilateral sanctions.

When you destroy your country's manufacturing base and weaken its economy to the benefit of another, and when that one country owns more of your country's national debt than any other investor outside the Social Security Trust Fund and the Federal Reserve, all the military power in the world doesn't amount to a hill of beans. I don't know what China threatened to make us back down and allow it to continue to buy Iranian oil, but I can imagine it had something to do with their growing economic power vis-a-vis our relative economic weakness.

Now I don't know what you think about America's Iranian sanctions regime, but it doesn't really matter. China demonstrated today that anytime it believes our government's policies, foreign or domestic, impinge upon its interests, it can demand we back down or weaken those policies, and our government has shown that we will accede to their demands. For the more our economy continues its death spiral, one fueled by tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations, increased taxes and financial burdens on the poor and middle classes, and other proposed "austerity" measures (that are doing such a bang up job in Europe at the moment to restore economic stability and growth over there) the greater China's influence worldwide and here in America - political, technological, and economic - will grow at the expense of our country, and in ways we cannot expect. In short, the more we rely on China to prop up our economy, the more we adopt economic policies that benefit foreign powers such as China, the more the Chinese government and it corporate interests will influence our politics and foreign policy at the expense of the vast majority of the welfare of our people.

Sure, the Romneys and Hedge Fund managers and Wall Street kings will make out okay. A "slash and burn" economic model can still be sustained for another 15 to 20 years and they'll make out like bandits, destroying America's manufacturing base and shipping it overseas, just like they have in the past twenty years. It's funny, but for all the conspiracy theorists on the right who claim Obama is some secret "Manchurian" candidate, those politicians who who are deepest in the pockets of foreign powers always seem to be Republicans, don't they? And Romney certainly fits the bill.

Don't take my word for it, just ask the good folks in Freeport IL (h/t to icebergslim) who Mittens cares about the most: the people of Freeport and their jobs or his buddies at Bain Capital's profits from tearing down and outsourcing Freeport's major employer, lock, stock and barrel to -- China? They know who is the real Manchurian Candidate in this election and it ain't President Obama.

Obama and Biden strike at Romney on overseas jobs

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden unleashed a back-to-back assault Tuesday on Republican challenger Mitt Romney, re-emphasizing Democratic assertions that Romney as a venture capitalist sent U.S. jobs overseas and paid no heed to the impact on American workers.

"You've got to give Mitt Romney credit," Biden said while campaigning in Iowa. "He's a job creator in Singapore, China, India."

Obama, who was fundraising in Atlanta and Miami, cast his Republican rival as the type of wealthy investor whose only goal was making money no matter the cost.

"His basic vision is one in which if wealthy investors like him, folks at the very top are freed up from any kind of regulations, if they are maximizing their profits, even if they are polluting more, or offshoring jobs or avoiding taxes or busting union, whatever the strategy is ? if they are doing well, then everybody else is automatically doing well," Obama told a crowd of Atlanta donors.

Behind the criticism of Romney's business record is the Obama campaign's belief that the effort to undermine a potential Romney strength ? his experience as the successful head of the private equity firm Bain Capital ? is yielding results and raising questions with voters.

Biden made note of news reports that Bain took over firms that sent jobs to China and India and opposed union efforts to increase wages and improve benefits. The Romney campaign has argued that the reports aren't accurate and don't take into account how work done overseas supports U.S. exports.

"The president and I don't see American workers as part of the problem. We see them as the heart of the solution," he said.

Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul called Biden's comments misleading and said they were an effort to distract voters from Obama's "disastrous economic record."

"President Obama has failed to meet his own standard for lowering unemployment because he has no idea what it takes to get our economy moving again," Saul said in a statement. "On Day One, Mitt Romney will take action to jumpstart our economy and give job creators the incentives they need to thrive here in America."

The back and forth on Romney's business record has become a familiar campaign theme. A political committee supporting Obama began airing an ad over the weekend accusing Romney of making millions while shutting down an Indiana paper plant.

Biden was beginning a two-day visit to Iowa, a swing state whose six electoral votes could be significant in the November election. He spoke to more than 400 people, many of them union members from a John Deere factory, transit workers and members of a public employees union.

For Obama, it was the second day of targeting Romney. He emphasized that their contest is a choice between ideologies, not a referendum on his own performance.

"The question is not whether we need to put more folks back to work or whether we need to see the economy growing faster or whether we need to bring down our debt," he told the crowd of donors in Atlanta. "The question is how do we do it."

The president spoke at a 500-person fundraising reception, with ticket prices starting at $500 per person. He had additional fundraisers planned later Tuesday in Florida.

The fundraising trip came as Obama and his team raised alarms that Romney and his Republican allies would outspend him during the presidential campaign.

In an e-mail to supporters Tuesday, Obama bluntly stated: "I will be the first president in modern history to be outspent in his re-election campaign, if things continue as they have so far."

The urgent tone was designed to spur more giving. Until last month, Obama had been by far the leading fundraiser in the presidential contest. But Romney, after securing the nomination, has consolidated his support.

Romney raised more than $76 million last month for his presidential campaign and for the GOP, compared to $60 million for Obama and the Democrats. Obama's advisers say they expect Republican-leaning super PACs to pull in $1.2 billion before the election, posing a big-money challenge for the president. Obama has more than $100 million in his campaign account, but Democratic super PACs have struggled to raise money.

Obama has now raised the stakes, saying that even without the help of GOP-leaning super PACs, Romney could still outspend him.

Obama was to collect more than $2.3 million at fundraisers in Atlanta and Miami on Tuesday following top-dollar events Monday night in Boston.

"They will spend more money than we have ever seen in American history, and their message is very simple," Obama said Monday in Boston. "They will just tell you that the economy is not where it needs to be, the economy is bad, and it's all my fault."

Obama was holding the fundraisers at the start of a pivotal week for his campaign. The Supreme Court is expected to rule on his health care overhaul law this week, passing judgment on the most significant piece of legislation during his presidency.

The president held two fundraisers in Atlanta, followed by two events in Miami Beach, including a performance by singer Marc Anthony.

Hi! I'm sorry, somebody already private messaged me and reserved the waterbender. Yes you can blood bend, and you don't have to do it on a full moon if you're a strong waterbender. Relationahip Status means if you're single or taken by another character. I'm sorry that it's been reserved. You can try one of the other characters who can tag along with Team Avatar.

Well, it's pretty much just like the TV Show, Avatar the Last Airbender. Except, instead of their characters you create your own. Right now a 100 Year War has started and the Avatar is the only one who can stop it. He is found, but he only knows the element of air and he has to learn the rest of the elements. Many people he meets will help him, many others will despise him. He must stay hidden and travel around the Four Nations to learn the elements along with his new friends who will help. Ashton Eaton sets world record in decathlon

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) ? Ashton Eaton likes to compare decathlons to life ? the ups and downs, the good and bad, the setbacks and comebacks.

Over two dreary days at the Olympic trials that finally ended with a bright ray of sunshine Saturday evening, Eaton found out just how good life can be.

He's the world-record holder in the decathlon, the cream of the crop in the hallowed and history-filled event that has long identified the world's greatest athlete.

Needing a personal best in the grueling finale, the 1,500 meters, to get the record, Eaton came through, running the last event in 4 minutes, 14.48 seconds to finish with 9,039 points and beat Roman Sebrle's 11-year-old mark by 13 points.

"It's like living an entire lifetime in two days," Eaton said. "It doesn't mean that much to the rest of the world, but to me, it's my whole world. To do the best that I possibly could in my world makes me pretty happy."

Eaton joined the likes of Bruce Jenner, Dan O'Brien, Bob Mathias and Rafer Johnson among the Americans who have held the world record. He did it on the 100th anniversary of the first Olympic decathlon ? and many of the American greats who have made history in the event were on hand to watch Eaton.

"I thought he showed some real courage," Johnson said. "He hung in there and figured out a way to win. He was brilliant in everything he did."

He did it in terrible weather ? drizzle, rain, cold and then, finally, sunshine as he got ready for the final 1,500-meter push.

"It's like the 11th event," runner-up Trey Hardee, the defending world champion, said about the weather. "I hope when they put his name in the record books, they'll put every parenthesis, asterisk and every other mark you can put down. Every athlete out there tries to act like that stuff doesn't bother them, but it does."

Eaton, the 24-year-old and a former NCAA champion for University of Oregon, needed to beat his personal-best time of 4:18.94 in the 1,500 by at least 2.57 seconds to break the mark. He did that, and then some.

When it was over, he bent down and put his hands on his knees, then brought them up to cover his mouth. Tears were falling ? elation and shock at the same time.

A few minutes later, he took the mini American flag he'd been handed as a newly minted member of the U.S. Olympic team and stabbed it into the turf near the scoreboard that displayed his accomplishment: "World Record Decathlon. Ashton Eaton. 9,039 points." Photographers lined up for the historic shoot. Certainly, Eaton will own a copy or two by the time this night is over.

"The kid is phenomenal," said Bryan Clay, the defending Olympic champion, who fell in the hurdles and finished 12th. "There's no other way to describe him."

What to do for an encore?

We'll see in six weeks in London, where he'll go in as the favorite, along with Hardee, who finished 656 points back and was every bit the fan when the last race was over.

"I don't think it changes anything for the Olympics," Hardee said. "It was his before we started yesterday and it still is now. It hasn't sunk in for Ashton. For me, it's something down the road that I'll tell my kids, my friends, my nephews about. I'll say, 'See, I saw it. I've got the pictures to prove it.'"

While Eaton earned his place in history, the women's 100 final provided a much less-concrete result.

After a long review, race officials determined Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh finished in a dead-heat for third place, each at 11.068 seconds. Only three spots are available at the Olympics and USA Track and Field officials were huddling, trying to solve a problem for which there is no written solution. Carmelita Jeter won the race in 10.92.

Elsewhere, Lolo Jones' leaned at the finish line to earn the third and final Olympic spot in the 100 hurdles by 0.04 seconds. Dawn Harper won in 12.73. Tyson Gay made it through his first 100 heat cleanly, while LaShawn Merritt, Jeremy Wariner and Sanya Richards-Ross all advanced in the 400.

Nobody, however, covered more ground, or did it better, than Eaton.

He opened his pursuit Friday by setting world-best marks for the decathlon in his first two events, the 100 (10.21 seconds) and long jump (27 feet). He had a mark of 46 feet, 7 1/4 inches in shot put, cleared 6-8 3/4 in the high jump and ran the 400 in a driving rainstorm in 46.70 seconds to finish the first day in the mix for the world record.

He returned Saturday to equally dreary weather, but didn't slip. The results: 13.70 seconds in the 110 hurdles, 140-5 inches in the discus, and 17-4 1/2 in the pole vault. His javelin throw of 193-1 meant he would need to top his personal best to set the world record.

The sun finally peaked out shortly before Eaton made it to the starting line, illuminating his green and black shirt and orange shoes. He stayed on pace the entire time and crossed the line with nearly 2 seconds to spare.

Eaton also overtook O'Brien's American record of 8,891 points, which he set in 1992 ? nine years before Sebrle became the first man to break 9,000 points.

"He didn't have any letdowns," O'Brien said. "It's real easy when you're way ahead to have that letdown. That's what separates him from even myself. I don't know if I would've run my guts out in the 1,500."

Eaton's record adds another chapter to a rich history of decathlon success in the United States.

Back in 1976, Jenner put the event squarely in the spotlight, winning the Montreal Olympics and becoming a celebrity when he returned home. He was on the front of the Wheaties box back then, and the fact that he's on the front of it now ? as part of a retro marketing campaign ? is as good an argument as any to show how the event has fallen in stature over the last few decades.

But that hardly diminishes this accomplishment.

It was, he said, more than he expected. He came here simply hoping to make the Olympic team. He'll leave with a spot in the history books.

"It's not just numbers," he said. "It's all the little stuff that you guys don't get to see that kind of makes this thing possible. There's really very few words to describe it, so unfortunately, I'm brief in that respect."

"Now that we are in the digital age, people get access to us not just by living near us,"?Louisiana State Representative Jeff Thompson explained when I asked him about a law he'd authored recently. The law forces registered sex offenders to identify themselves ? and explain the nature of their crimes???on social networks. ?A $1,000 fine and at least two years of prison (with hard labor) await those who fail to comply.

Thompson's law will be effective Aug. 1, and is basically an addition to existing sex offender notification laws.?Under current law, Thompson pointed out, sex offenders are required to give notice to certain individuals and organizations based on their geographic proximity. (For example, they have to notify those who reside near them, the local school district, local parks, and other places where there may be children.)

The new law?additions stipulate that any registered sex offender, "who is otherwise not prohibited from using a networking website, and who creates a profile or uses the functionality of a networking website to contact or attempt to contact other networking website users shall include in his profile for the networking website an indication that he is a sex offender or child predator and shall include notice of the crime for which he was convicted, the jurisdiction of confiction, a description of his physical characteristics as required by [the relevant laws], and his residential address."?This information must be made visible to users and visitors of the site.

The definition of a "networking website," in this context, is reasonably broad. Any site which focuses on social interaction and includes profile pages, photos, and the ability to send messages or leave comments appears to be included. This would suggest that Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and many other popular websites are covered by it. (Though the law is moot when it comes to Facebook, as?its terms of use prohibit convicted sex offenders from using the social network.)

While discussing the law with me, Thompson emphasized that it is simply a way of bringing existing laws up to date with current technology. The information sex offenders will have to provide on social networks matches the details which are printed in local papers upon conviction.

For that reason, the penalties are equal.?Failure to comply with the law leads to a $1,000 fine and at least two ??but no more than ten ??years of inprisonment (with hard labor). A second violation would bring a?$3,000 fine and at least five ??but no more than twenty ??years of inprisonment (with hard labor).

"It may not be the perfect solution," Thompson acknowledges, but says?he has a responsibility to his constituents. And this is theoretically?more reasonable than attempting to ban some folks from the Internet entirely.

Radiohead Concert Stage Collapse: Toronto Downsview Park Incident Kills At Least 1

TORONTO -- Toronto paramedics say one person is dead and another is seriously hurt after a stage collapsed while setting up for a Radiohead concert.

They say two other people were injured and are being assessed.

Some at Downsview Park ahead of the show are saying on Twitter that the area has been cleared by emergency crews.

The venue said on its website that the concert has been canceled.
