Learn wilderness first aid, other stuff at REI | rei, wilderness, winter ...

REI stores have a slew of cool health- and fitness-related classes and workshops this winter.

Upcoming ones include a meditation class at the Tustin Market Place on Friday at 4 p.m.

One of the more intriguing events on the calendar is "Wilderness First Aid," which is happening at the Manhattan Beach REI this Saturday and Sunday, and at the Tustin location Jan. 26-27. It's not quick, and it's not cheap: Each workshop last eight hours a day for the two days, and costs $220.

The workshop will be taught by an expert from the Wilderness Medicine Institute, based in Lander, Wyo. Students will learn how to help someone who's injured or ill, in winter or other seasons, out in the backcountry.

"It's a basic layperson, everyday-person course," says Tod Schimelpfenig, the group's curriculum director. "Health care professionals take it, but the primary focus of the course is the lay outdoor recreationist, maybe a local troop leader."
