The founder of Orchha, Maharaja Rudra Prathap Singh was also the first king of Orchha. He was the Bundela chief who built the fort of Orchha for which the place is now famous among the tourists. The Chatur Bhuj Temple, yet another attraction of the town of Orchha was built by the Queen of Orchha, Ganeshi Bai, at the time of Akbar. The Raj Mandir was built by Madhukar Shah during his reign from 1554 to 1591. The Raja Mahal, Jahangir Mahal and the Ram Raja Temple are the other main tourist attraction of the town of Orchha.
The town of Orchha stands on the banks of the River Betwa, where stands a huge palace fort surrounded by a battlement wall. This fort consists of several buildings that are connected to each other which were constructed during different times. The most notable ones are the Raja Mahal and the Jahangir Mahal.
Built on a square base which has a fully plain exterior is the Ram Raja Temple. This has projecting windows and a line of delicate domes along the summit.
The Jahangir Mahal is built on a rectangular base and has a circular tower at each corner which has a dome on top of it.Two lines of beautiful balconies that are supported on brackets mark the middle storey. The roof is crowned by eight large grooved domes, with smaller domes between them, connected by an ornamental railing. The Jahangir Mahal is considered to be a singularly beautiful specimen of theMughal architecture.
Chaturbhuj Temple is an old temple built in the 9th century. It is built on a vast platform of stone. The more ignored and neglected these buildings and monuments are the more favorite they are for the insects and bees.
A lot of Chatris or monuments and memorials can be dotted on the vicinity of the fort and the Betwa River. The architecture of the monuments of Orchha has attracted numerous architects and a documentary based on them was made by the LIK team of the IIT Roorkee.
The famous tourist spot, Khajuraho is easily accessible from Orchha. The nearest railway station to Orchha is at Jhansi.
