Why did the city ban chain link fences in the first place? What?s wrong with them?
The City?s Response:
The citizen-led task force that guided creation of the Unified Development Code had a strong interest in improving Laramie?s visual appearance, and considered several types of fencing ? including chain-link ? to be incompatible with those improvements. Unfortunately, there are a number of specific chain-link fences in town that have been allowed to fall into disrepair over the years, including several along high-traffic major streets. Chain-link fence quality has improved in recent years, but older fences persist, leading to the impression that all chain-link fences become shabby sooner or later. Amendments to the UDC have been proposed to allow more chain-link in less-visible locations, and to specify higher quality new fences, such as vinyl-clad chain-link rather than bare metal. These amendments may establish a middle ground between practicality and beauty.
